How to Choose Wisely – Part 3

Tip #3- Check the foundation!

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord. And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree, planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the winds drive away (Psalm 4:1-4, NKJV).

“I can tell how strong a house is, by checking its foundation”. Those very words were mentioned by a contractor, as I sat among those also interested in buying. Having such a keen eye and experience, he knew what to look for and whether buyers would have the gem they were searching for. Thinking about what he said, immediately I thought of a story that all would be familiar with. Okay, I’m going to get elementary right here. However, I can’t find another way to adequately explain my tip. Why? The story we were told as youngsters brings this perspective to light. Do you recall the tale about Three Little Pigs? One built his house on straw and the other with sticks. However, one took the time to build his house with brick. Although houses made of straw and sticks were built faster, only one was able to stand when the infamous big bad wolf made his debut. The house made of brick stood the test of time and proved formidable as the wolf desired to blow down the house, in order to capture a meal. As Christians, our foundation lie in the relationship we have with Christ. Reading, understanding, and meditating on His Word can be viewed as spiritual bricks that will help us stand during seasons of lack and abundance. When trials come, we will not be easily swayed because the laying of our foundation is set in Christ. As potential mates approach, we can check their foundation by the Word hidden in their hearts. Discernment is so crucial! Will they run away by the mention of Christs’ name? Will they look at you crazy when you pray during a meal? Furthermore, we cannot assume that because one is familiar with “church lingo”, etc. their foundation is set. When we allow God to be Lord over our lives, He will let us know which foundation is solid and those who are on shaky ground.  Until then, lets purpose in our hearts to have a sure-footing in His Word. Only a true relationship with Him will guide us into the relationship whose house is built on brick. It’s worth the wait!
